From 24 April to 5 May 2017, government leaders, UN representatives, and representatives from civil society are gathering at the UN Headquarters in New York to discuss issues affecting indigenous people around the world. The theme for this year’s session is the “Tenth Anniversary of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples: Measures Taken to Implement the Declaration”.
The forum provides an opportunity to take stock of how the declaration has been implemented by the UN and Member States and to determine how best to address the gaps in implementation. Much action is still needed to address disparities experienced by indigenous peoples in terms of poverty, education, health, violence and abuse, discrimination and racism, economic empowerment, climate change, land rights, and culture and identity.
