The move of 2021 Commission for Social Development Forum (CSocD59) to an online platform not only enabled a more diverse participants at the event especially from the global south, but also highlighted the timeliness of this year’s theme – “Socially just transition towards sustainable development: the role of digital technologies on social development and well-being of all.”
As schools and businesses moved their activities online, we realised the great digital divide in all parts of the world. Among our IBVM/CJ network, a number of our students were shut out – unable to access their right to education.
When the Member States adopted the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (‘SDGs’), they committed to achieving sustainable development for all peoples and to leave no one behind. The world is shifting towards a more digital world – leaving no one behind means leaving no one offline. Especially when we heard that the cost is equal to the amount we spend on soft drinks each year!
Our network’s presence and advocacy at the CSoCD59 meant we were able to bring the voices of the vulnerable people with whom we work at the table.
