We, the girls of the 66th Commission of the Status of Women and Girls, see climate change as a global emergency for girls. ...We must examine climate change’s disproportionate effect on girls, especially those from rural and indigenous communities. ...We call on Member States to partner with us to produce girl-specific solutions to the climate crisis.
Seventeen young people from our IBVM/CJ network attended the 66th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women as our youth delegates. Eleven students from IBVM and CJ schools in India, Nepal and Canada attended various advocacy workshops organised by the Working Group on Girls as facilitators and participants. They were supported by our group of youth interns – Riya Bhargava, Carlota Gayo Nieto and Zindzi Malanca.
A number of the students were part of the group who wrote the Girl Statement that was delivered on March 22 to member states at CSW66. The Girls called on the member states to listen to them and ensure that girls are at the forefront of all policy creation and decision-making. They reminded them of their responsibility to support them and ensure that they are equipped with climate-adaptation resources and educational opportunities. Read their full Statement HERE.
