On Tuesday 9 June, seven Year 11 SRC students participated in a Youth Advocacy Zoom discussing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs).
Our students joined peers from Loreto Normanhurst to discuss Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6); Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7); Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (SDG 9); Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11) and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17).
Student contributions were valued and well considered as they shared their perspectives on both opportunities and challenges that face youth today and into the future.
These ideas will be part of the final advocacy document, highlights of which will be shared during a global virtual side event at the United Nations High-Level Political Forum in July this year.

I really enjoyed the conversation circle, I thought it was very interesting to hear about Loreto Normanhurst initiatives around the SDGs. I really enjoyed engaging with hearing other people’s thoughts on their experiences with the SDGs.

Part of our discussion was based on the UN Sustainable Development Goal 11 of Sustainable Cities and Communities. We presented many different viewpoints regarding how sustainability has played out in our community. One thing I found interesting was: in an effort to make Sydney more sustainable, the new metro line runs on electricity and are now driverless. We questioned how with the lack of human involvement and increased reliance on technology, accessibility of those requiring assistance in boarding and utilising public transport has reduced, linking to sustainable Goal 10 – Reducing Inequalities in Society.

This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to connect with the important work of the Loreto Sisters at the United Nations.
