On 26 April 2023 a virtual townhall meeting with stakeholder was hosted by the Permanent Representatives of the Mission of Luxembourg and Mission of South Africa. The consultation was held for the High-level Dialogue on Financing for Development (FfD) of the General Assembly, which will take place in September 2023. The purpose of this meeting was to brief stakeholders on the process and to hear their expectations for the High-level Dialogue.
Cynthia Mathew CJ delivered an intervention on behalf of the NGO on FfD. She indicated the Civil Society expects that the High Level Dialogue will:
- Lead all the Member States to recognize Social Protection as a Human Right and ensure adequate social protection that reaches all corners of every country, taking care to stem the leakage of funds through corruption and inefficiency. That it will create and implement adequate, rights-based, effective, efficient, universal and sustainable social protection systems.
- Help the Member States to come to consensus for a Global Fund for Social Protection.
- Agree on a comprehensive sovereign debt – restructuring system that brings low and middle-income countries to sustainable debt while maintaining adequate social protection.
- Ensure that countries invest in social protection systems for delivering on the promise of the SDGs since the United Nations 2030 Agenda recognizes social protection systems as a key enabler of the SDGs and states that “All people must enjoy a basic standard of living, including through social protection systems.”
