Stressing that (the) rights of the child are human rights and that these rights need to be protected both offline and online.
The 31st Session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice was held from 16 to 20 May 2022 in Vienna. It was held in a hybrid format making possible for Nabanita Shome from Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre (KMWSC) to attend as our delegate.
There were 1,300 participants that included Member States, United Nations Institutes, intergovernmental organisations and non-governmental organisations. Aside from the formal proceedings, there were over 80 workshops and side events organised.
Three Resolutions were adopted at the session: Strengthening the international legal framework for international cooperation to prevent and combat illicit trafficking in wildlife; Reducing reoffending of through rehabilitation and reintegration, and Strengthening national and international efforts, including with the private sector, to protect children from sexual exploitation and abuse. She listed her three important reflection points:
1. Survivor base approach: reach out to a survivor should be on the terms of the survivors and not based on our concept of what is right and wrong
2. Most functioning bodies and stakeholders try to achieve the pre-set agenda to combat trafficking where the need for survivors becomes secondary.
3. Networking and advocacy with key stakeholders to combat trafficking
