Transformative Experience as a CJ Youth Delegate

WebsitePost_2025 Front Cover

Being a youth delegate for IBVM/CJ at the 2025 High-Level Political Forum was a truly transformative experience. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to see firsthand how the United Nations functions and how it actively engages with NGOs and civil society to shape global conversations on the Sustainable Development Goals.

This exposure gave me valuable insights into a field I may want to pursue in the future, as I learned so much about international cooperation, advocacy, and the challenges of multilateralism. Coming from an all-girls school in Germany, I already understood how central SDG 3 (Good Health and Wellbeing) and SDG 5 (Gender Equality) are. At the HLPF, I was able to see these goals discussed in real depth, and it confirmed to me just how much they are intertwined with all other areas of sustainable development. Throughout the Forum, I met inspiring and interesting people, many of them young like myself. I was able to engage in various discussions – not only in formal sessions but also in informal spaces – to advocate for issues I care deeply about, especially gender equality.

One of the greatest highlights for me was the official Side Event that my own organization hosted: “Gender Equality: The Key Ingredient for SDG2030.” I had the privilege of being one of the speakers, sharing my personal perspective on life as a young woman in Germany. Having the chance to speak at a Side Event and to contribute my voice to the global dialogue was both humbling and empowering. This was not only a highlight but also a moment of affirmation that youth voices truly matter in these spaces.

Since I am German, another important part of my experience was analyzing Germany’s Voluntary National Review (VNR), which was presented during the Forum. Being present for this and studying what my country officially published allowed me to connect my national context with the broader UN process. It was meaningful to see both the progress and the challenges highlighted, and it gave me a clearer understanding of where Germany stands in terms of SDG implementation.

Overall, my time at the HLPF was an incredible learning journey. It gave me the chance to grow as an advocate, to connect with others who are passionate about justice and sustainability, and to experience what global dialogue looks like in practice. I leave this experience motivated to continue contributing my voice and energy to advancing the SDGs, especially those that concern the health, rights, and empowerment of women and girls.
